Supporting Religious Education - St. Paul's Church, Kandy

Christianity in our country remains a minority religion. Since the taking over of our Christian Schools in 1963, by the then government, there were a handful of schools left with our churches as Christian schools. Many of these schools are private schools with very high fees and only a few Christian children could afford to enter these prestigious Schools. This deprives the majority poor Christian children, who are being compelled to enter the government run schools.

As the numbers are negligible compared to the majority Buddhist Children who enter these schools, the government has failed to recruit any Christian teacher to teach Christianity to these children, in many of the schools. Most of the Christian children who enter these schools are forced to follow and study other religions, mainly Buddhism as there are no options left for them. Religion is a compulsory subject at the Ordinary Level Exam.

The matter was taken up with many religious authorities and the National Christian Council of Sri Lanka and the Religious affairs Ministry, without any success of a lasting solution. St. Paul’s Church at this juncture decided to sponsor a Christian Teacher’s Salary every month, to Gothami Balika Vidyalaya and Mahanama Vidyalaya, as most of our Evelyn Nursery Children attends the Gothami Balika Vidyalaya and some children of our parishioners attend the Mahanama Vidyalaya.

It was heartening to note that children benefited immensely with very high grading at their Ordinary Level Examination after a lapse of 5-6 years, without a teacher. Three children received A grade in Christianity and two students received B grade, among the 5 children who sat for their OL examination at Gothami Balika Vidyalaya in 2013.
