Is a Project that was thought about from year 1990 but could not get off the ground till 8th of November, 2008, for the lack of a proper facility? Through the generosity of a parishioner we were able to start our Elder’s Home (also known as the Eventide Home) in a beautiful location by the side of the Mahaweli River in Kundasale, near Kandy. It is a most tranquil place, ideal for old people to spend their time away from the noise of a township. It was a long felt need as we did not have a home for Christian Elders’ in Kandy.
The home has accommodation for 12 persons at present. The rooms are on a sharing basis with attached toilets with hot water all rooms are provide with fans, call bells and mosquito nets. The home provides all the hard furnishing and the soft furnishing and the inmates are generally not required to bring any of these items. The home has a well appointed dining room and lounge with television, radio and indoor games.
The project is managed by a committee of 8 persons with the Vicar as Chairman. It has been the decision of the committee that only females will be taken at least for the present. Though we have had males in the home, it has been difficult to find suitable carers for them. The home is managed by a Matron, two helpers and a cook; there is also a part time gardener.
In this short period of time since its inception 29 persons have gone through the home and 15 have spent their last days of their lives here. We thank God for having given us the opportunity of looking after them. Though we insist that only persons who could attend to their day to day needs is taken in, quite often it has turned out that we have had to take very old people on very sympathetic grounds and we had two ladies in their 90’s, so much so that it has at times become a hospice.
The Home caters to only Christians and is fee levying. We have two places for persons who can not pay. There is an Rs 50,000/- non refundable deposit called for and a monthly charge of Rs 20,000/-. All meals and medical attention of a minor nature is met by the Home. Application forms could be had from the church office at 10, Deva Veediya, Kandy. E mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
